Katherine Mansfield was born in New Zealand in 1888 and did more living in her thirty-four years on earth than most people manage in much longer lives.
When she died, she was recognised as one of the most important short story writers of her time in the English-speaking world. Besides writing though she travelled over much of central Europe, married twice, had many intimate relationships with both men and women and was befriended by some of the greatest authors of her day. Although she never made much money from her work and lived on an allowance sent by her father.
