This lesson plan illustrates ways in which our Pre-Intermediate level graded reader The Story Teller by Saki can be used with students.
We hope that people using Read Listen Learn will find it useful.
You can read the article here and there is also a video of it on our YouTube channel.
The class should be able to read relatively quickly and to garner meaning at the same time if the story is to be read in class, as it is 1,700 words long.
Close reading
Students will be able to demonstrate that they have understood a long text and the characters in it well enough to base a sequel on their personality traits.
The task at first sight appears quite hard for PI students but the story itself gives a clue to a possible sequel when the story teller expresses (false) sympathy for the aunt by imagining that the kids will ask her for naughty stories in public in the future.
The teacher will group students so that they can support each other in reading the text, if some members are perplexed by difficult vocab or structures.
Students will allocate roles within their group: one will recount the plot; another will discuss the traits of the main characters.
Students will explain the tasks relating to their roles to the rest of the group.
Students will use this information in order to come up with an outline for a sequel to this story
Students will present their outline to the other groups.
