Sherlock Holmes was the most famous creation of author Arthur Conan Doyle and his stories are considered important milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Conan Doyle wrote many stories that didn't feature him at all and often wished he had never created him as he felt his popularity prevented him from working on more important projects.
However, Holmes is probably still the world's best-known fictional detective despite that fact that crime fiction remains extremely popular and there have been many stories written since Conan Doyle's time featuring many new detectives.
